How thick can I cut with a fiberlaser?

The maximum cutting thickness for fiber laser machines depends on a number of factors. The power of the laser source plays the largest role in this. With more power, the material can be 'pierced' faster and thicker material can be cut at higher speeds.
However, the laser source power is not everything. The points of attention below also have a huge influence on the maximum cutting thickness of your laser machine.
Gases for cutting
Typically, oxygen or nitrogen is used to cut sheet material with a fiber laser.
Sometimes compressed air or argon are also used. However, the principle remains the same.
Oxygen induces an exothermic reaction and therefore adds energy to the cutting process. This cuts thicker materials, but it can also oxidize the cut edge.
By using nitrogen or argon, the oxygen is expelled from the ambient air and oxidation is prevented.
However, nitrogen and argon "suppress" the reaction so that more energy (laser power) is required to cut the same sheet metal thickness.
Laser focus & beam characteristics
The maximum energy per surface unit is achieved with a fiber laser in the focal point of the focusing lens.
If the focus point is moved relative to the material, this also has a direct effect on the maximum cutting thickness.
Depending on the type of laser source, the shape or characteristics of the laser beam can optionally be changed.
This also directly influences the maximum achievable cutting thickness.
Gas pressure - nozzle type - lens
In addition to the above factors, factors like gas pressure and nozzle type will also affect the capabilities of your laser machine.
The lens type or the focal length of the lens used also have an effect on the cutting thicknesses.
As you can see, many things have to come together for best results. However, if you want to achieve a specific cutting thickness,
you must at least start with the correct laser source power. If the source does not provide enough laser power, all other factors can never help you achieve your ultimate goal.
